Social Justice & Inclusion

My competency in this area is at the foundational level. My coursework in Multicultural Counseling allowed me to explore the different tenants of oppression, privilege, and power. Requirments of this course were to attend several cultural events in the city of Buffalo to immerse myself with those who are different from me. These experiences, along with the course material, allowed me to examine my identity and in the lense of privledge and social justice in order to be able to advocate and support students from different backgrounds.

In my experiences working with TRiO for SSS and McNair. I also expanded upon my competency in social justice and inclusion. The majority of students I work with are from very diverse backgrounds. In this way I get to build very meaningful relationships with students who have very different identities, perspectives, and levels of privilege. My competency has further developed in this area through attending a lecture on difficult conversations at UB which included talking about privledge and power.
